    Anne Johnson takes up VSO assignment with CFZS: Anne Johnson has taken up a 12 month VSO assignment working with the Computers for Zambian Schools trust in Lusaka. Anne is helping to see through the changes to make CFZS fully sustainable as they move to new premises at Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka.     CFZS team help load the first shipment of e-waste to go to DESCO

    New partnership with Computer Recyclers DESCO: CFAS have agreed that all waste and end of life computer equipment generated through our schemes in southern Africa will be processed by DESCO in Jo'burg. DESCO are the biggest computer recyclers in Africa and have a no land fill policy. The first shipment of waste from the Zambian scheme has already been received by DESCO.

    Computers for Malawian Schools Apply for Registration: Following a reorganisation of the administrative arrangements in Malawi, CFMS have been reestablished with a range of new trustees, and is being formally registered with the help of Sarah Barber, the CFAS volunteer doing a six month assignment in Malawi. The new committee will work to make the scheme in Malawi more sustainable for the future.

    Beit Trust Chairman and CEO visit Malawian Scheme: Sir Alan Monro and Tim Johnson of Beit Trust recently visited the CFMS centre in Blantyre and viewed one of our recipient schools in Njambe, Malawi, with Sarah Barber. Sir Alan was very impressed by the impact that having computers at the school was having in developing the skills and prospects of the students.

    CFAS get support from John Humphrys’ charity KTCT

    CFAS get support from John Humphrys’ charity KTCT: We’re very pleased to have gained a new sponsor in the shape of the Kitchen Table Charities Trusts set up by the broadcaster John Humphrys. KTCT’s funding is being used to help the launch of the Computers for Zanzibar Schools scheme. John comments that "Internet access and improved IT skills for Africa 's children are essential if the continent is to benefit from the challenges and opportunities of globalisation. The Kitchen Table Charities Trust is therefore proud to support Computers for African Schools new project in Tanzania.”

    Computers for Zanzibar Schools Registered: CFZanS are now registered as an NGO, with a board of trustees from various sectors of Zanzibar. The first two shipments of total of 260 computers have been received and are being process at the technical centre at Karume Technical College in Stone Town.


    Computers for Zambian School Trust now registered: CFZS are now fully registered as an NGO in Zambia . The previous committee members have all become trustees of the organisation. This has allowed them to give the local Technical Team working contracts and to apply for exemption on import duties. They have agreed a sponsorship deal with MTN and are hoping to get further sponsors and have a programme to ensure long-term sustainability.

    CFZS distribute 3000th computer: Luapula province was the venue for a reception to commemorate the fact that Computers for Zambian Schools were distributing the 3000th computers in Zambia since the programme started. It was attend by the Hon..Minister for Laupula province, Provincial Education Offices for both Luapula and Northern provinces and other distinguished guest. It was very colourful event and 118 computers were also presented to 16 local schools. The launch was shown on Zambian national television main news.

    Jane and Jon complete their placements with CFZS: Jane Burston and Jon Alexander have concluded their project with CFZS in Lusaka with a 2-week stint in Malawi , helping the scheme there. During their time with CFZS amongst many other things they have: seen through the registration of the organisation, developed strategies and objectives, drafted working contracts for the employees, formalised the teacher training programme and the school allocation system, written self help manuals for the schools, found financial sponsors to cover local costs, liased with other organisations such as VSO and Microsoft to ensure their involvement and secure a replacement VSO volunteer placement form October. They are now taking a well-earned holiday touring Africa .

    Partnership with IT Schools Africa: CFAS and IT Schools Africa have agreed an on-going partnership to develop on the programme of work started by CFAS . ITSA are a Cheltenham based charity that started operation last October. Their aims and principals are very similar to CFAS and we will work together to acquire and process computers to feed our existing African schools programmes and develop future programmes. The handling of all CFAS will now be carried out from the ITSA warehouse in Cheltenham.

     

    Proposal for new programme in Tanzania: Preparations are being made to extend the work already done in Tanzania to develop a full country programme. Discussions are currently underway with the Ministry of Education, British Council and other NGO’s to develop the proposal. It is likely this will initially involve a pilot scheme in Zanzibar . We are seeking sponsors to help cover transportation costs and initial start up costs.

    Prisoners carry out refurbishment for CFAS: With the cooperation of Inside Out Trust a significant number of the computers that CFAS process will be carried out by prisoners at Winchester and Stafford prison. This offers a real mutual benefit, since the prisoners are acquiring new, useful skills whilst processing the computers to benefit children in the developing world.
